We started off yesterday, the 3rd day in Kachia reserve, buying pipe, pipe caps and plumbing glue in Kaduna, then driving to Kachia reserve, where we met Ayuba and village head at a primary school in a community with no water. That’s where we’ll put borehole 4, at Wuro Jouro. We went on motorcycles deep into the bush to see a broken dam and troughs, the dam merely a large, shallow puddle in a wide basin, but still some water there. Cows came down to drink while we were there – beautiful sight. Issue of dam is a failed spillway. Then we prepared to demonstrate manual borehole drilling with hand-held auger Chester had gotten through WaterStep.Tried in 2 locations to drill manually - one too sandy, one too rocky, finally found right spot at the 3rd location. At the end of the day, after drilling down 18 feet, we had 11 feet of water in the bailing bucket! Put casing, gravel, secured it, bailed it, capped it. A new borehole and clean water in 4 hours! By hand! We dedicated the borehole, praying with the workers, families and children who had helped to drill it. Gifts of 10 chickens, 5 fish and a huge bag of ‘no no’. Began to drive back to Kaduna. Car broke down almost immediately, another broken fan belt. We got another car quickly and got the visitors to the hotel leaving Danjuma, Haruna and Aliu to buy another belt and fix the car. This morning we leave for the second reserve, Garbagal, in the far north. A six hour drive!
